Do You Have a Personal Theme?

Do You Have a Personal Theme?

By Annie Wills

I had an experience at the beginning of this new year that motivated me to decide on a personal theme for the year. Without boring you with all the details, let's just say there was an event and as I reacted to the event, it became obvious that said event had evoked emotions and defensiveness way beyond what was to be expected. So I had to take a look at myself and see if I could figure out why I responded so strongly. (Don't ya hate when that happens?!)

What I learned was that instead of accepting what had occurred and moving on to be present to the next moment in my life, I had created a story in my head about what the event meant, what other people were thinking, and what it all said about me. Whew! What a lot of meaning I was putting into one little event.

Luckily I realized what I was doing pretty quickly and made the choice to do something different. And in the process I understood that, while it's human nature to create stories to give meaning to life's events, it doesn't always serve us well to do so.

I decided to work on letting go of creating stories. So my theme for 2010 is to accept the events that occur in my life simply as events that occurred. Sure I'll have emotional responses to them, but I can stop there, process the feelings, and move on to the next moment in my life.

Antitrust concerns linger in Google Books deal

Antitrust concerns linger in Google Books deal

The revised Google Books settlement agreement may quiet international opponents, but it still gives Google a monopoly on commercialising out-of-print books where the copyrights are unclaimed and fails to protect consumer privacy, opponents said on Monday.

"We're at a crossroads," Internet Archive director Brewster Kahle said during a panel late on Monday on the Future of Books at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. "Is it going to be a subscription life... where one or two companies own the distribution and presentation [rights] to these books?"

In response, Google Books engineering director Dan Clancy said: "This is just one of a panoply of choices that people will have in the future."

Scientology faces allegations of abuse and covering up deaths in Australia - The Irish Times - Thu, Nov 19, 2009

THE CHURCH of Scientology in Australia was last night defending itself from a scathing attack by a politician using parliamentary privilege.

In a senate speech late on Tuesday, independent south Australia senator Nick Xenophon said: “Scientology is not a religious organisation. It is a criminal organisation that hides behind its so-called religious beliefs.”

Mr Xenophon questioned Scientology’s tax exemption status and called for it to be investigated by the police and parliament.

The senator tabled letters he received from former Scientology members detailing claims of abuse, false imprisonment, forced abortion, embezzlement and the covering up of children’s deaths.

“One of the saddest correspondences I have received – and they are all sad – is from Paul Schofield,” said Mr Xenophon.

Mr Schofield alleges the cover-up of child abuse by Scientology and admitted being part of a campaign to cover up the facts surrounding the deaths of two of his daughters. “Lauren, who was 14 months old, was being babysat at the organisation’s building in Sydney when she was allowed to wander the stairs by herself and fall. She died in hospital two days later,” said Mr Xenophon.

Mr Schofield said he felt pressured by Scientology executives not to request an inquiry, and was told if he sought compensation he and his wife would be ineligible for any church services. “His second daughter, Kirsty, who was 2½, died after ingesting potassium chloride – a substance used as part of a so-called ‘purification programme’ run by the organisation,” said Mr Xenophon.

Mr Schofield says he perjured himself to the police in the inquest to protect the church.

A letter from former Scientologist Aaron Saxton said he was involved in coercing female followers to have abortions.

He said this was part of a policy designed to keep followers loyal and to allow them to continue working for the organisation.

The Church of Scientology said Mr Xenophon’s allegations were an abuse of parliamentary privilege.

“If these people had key issues, then how come they haven’t contacted the church officially? . . . I think it’s a bit disingenuous that someone stands up in parliament, where they can say whatever they want,” said Scientology spokeswoman Virginia Stewart.

Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd said Mr Xenophon’s speech contained “grave allegations”.

“I share some of those concerns but let us proceed carefully and look carefully at the material which he has provided before we make a decision on further parliamentary action,” he said.

Sen. Edward Kennedy's body arrives in Boston at JFK library after mass for family in Hyannis Port

The body of Sen. Edward Kennedy departed his family's Hyannis Port compound for the final time Thursday, making the trip to Boston along a sorrowful route that traced his remarkable life and times.

The late liberal icon's family assembled in their oceanside home for a private Mass before the motorcade departed for a two-day public wake inside the JFK Presidential Library.
Kennedy's son Patrick, a Rhode Island congressman, greeted a large group of relatives gathered for yet another family funeral before the eyes of a nation.
Caroline Kennedy, daughter of former President John F. Kennedy, and Maria Shriver, daughter of his late sister Eunice, were among those in attendance.

Kennedy's second wife, Victoria, and his lone remaining sibling, Jean Kennedy Smith, stood at the head of the family contingent.

Kennedy's flag-draped, dark wood casket was escorted from the front of the house by a nine-member honor guard on a cool August afternoon.

Kennedy, universally known as Teddy, died Tuesday at age 77 after a 15-month battle with brain cancer.

His large Irish-Catholic family stood silently, filling the driveway and front porch, when the casket came out at 1:49 p.m.

A flag at the compound flew at half-mast, and neighbors watched silently from behind a white picket fence.

The black hearse carrying the senator's coffin led the cortege of black limousines, SUVs and a chartered bus. The motorcade included 85 family members from three generations.

Two dozen motorcycle police accompanied the group on their mournful trip.

The motorcade made the 70-mile trek from Cape Cod, where Kennedy spent his final days, to Boston, the city of his birth.

The route was lined with friends, fans and mourners. Once in Boston, the hearse was greeted with cheers and applause.

Kennedy's casket will sit inside the library's Stephen E. Smith Center - named for his late brother-in-law, the husband of his last surviving sibling Jean.

A makeshift memorial of flowers was growing ever larger outside the museum's front door. Inside the lobby, photos of Kennedy and his brothers stood on a table covered with a white cloth and decorated with white flowers.

Kennedy's constituents and other fans of the 47-year Senate veteran arrived at the library early Thursday to sign a guestbook set up in the lobby.

"His death is a huge loss for the country," said Acey Meel of Dorchester, Mass., who brought her 6-month-old daughter Maggie.

Meel is a married lesbian, and she hailed Kennedy for his efforts on behalf of gay rights.

"As a gay woman raising a daughter with a wife, I just felt appreciative," she said, noting Kennedy's commitment "years before it was popular."

Once in Boston, the motorcade will drive past several touchstones from the Massachusetts native's past: St. Stephen's Church, where his mother Rose was baptized; 122 Bowdoin St., where his brother John lived while running for Congress in 1946; the JKF Federal Building, where the senator kept his office for years.

The final destination was the library, one of Kennedy's pet projects.

Public viewing was set to start inside the library at 6 p.m., and run for five hours. He will lie in repose again Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Five milestones during Don Hewitt's tenure with '60 Minutes'

Source: NY Daily times

1. Jan. 22, 1982: An extended 90-minute program called 'The Uncounted Enemy,' narrated by Mike Wallace, charges that William Westmoreland, commander of U.S. forces in Vietnam in the middle 1960s, was part of a conspiracy to withhold the true strength of enemy forces from President Lyndon Johnson. Westmoreland called the report a "preposterous hoax" and sued. After a five-month trial from late 1984 to February 1985, the case was settled just before it would have gone to the jury. CBS issued a statement saying it did not believe Westmoreland was unpatriotic and Westmoreland claimed he was exonerated. CBS in a separate statement maintained the report was "fair and accurate."

2. Dec. 9, 1983
: Morley Safer reports on the flawed robbery conviction of a Texas man, Lenell Geter. After the report, which includes eyewitnesses who rejected the verdict, Geter is freed. Hewitt later calls this the finest hour for "60 Minutes."

3. Jan. 26, 1992: Gov. Bill Clinton appears with his wife Hillary to deny charges he had an extramarital affair. His performance, and his wife's support, keeps him in the race for the Democratic Presidential nomination.

4. Feb. 4, 1996: Former tobacco executive Jeffrey Wigand accuses Brown and Williamson of manipulating nicotine content to make cigarettes more addictive. Equally dramatic, Hewitt and "60 Minutes" get into a public fight with CBS about airing the interview at all, due to concern about a potential suit. Hewitt later said he "wasn't proud" of his behavior in the case. Three years later, Russell Crowe portrays Wigand in the movie "The Insider."

5. Nov. 24, 1998: Dr. Jack Kevorkian, a euthanasia advocate, shows tape of himself injecting a lethal "mercy killing" injection. Kevorkian is subsequently convicted of murder. Hewitt argues it was not a ratings stunt, but a spur to debate on an "important issue."

VH1 pulls Megan Wants a Millionaire from schedule - TV Ratings, Nielsen Ratings, Television Show Ratings

Megan Fox at a Transformers EventImage by Megan Fox Rules! via Flickr

Source: TVbytheNumbers.com
I saw yesterday the news about the guy who had been a contestant on VH1’s Megan Wants a Millionaire now being a possible suspect in the killing of a model whose dead body was stuffed inside a suitcase. That sort of thing is way more TMZ than TV by the Numbers, so I didn’t post anything about it.

But now comes word that Viacom’s VH1 has yanked the show of its schedule for now and is trying to distance itself from any scandal. That’s refreshing given that juicy scandal is usually ratings gold.

VH1’s Official Statement:
Ryan Jenkins was a contestant on Megan Wants A Millionaire, an outside production, produced and owned by 51 Minds, that is licensed to VH1. The show completed production at the end of March. Given the unfortunate circumstances, VH1 has postponed any future airings. This is a tragic situation and our thoughts go out to the victim’s family.
